Our aim is to make participation in the programmes and activities of KBB possible for everyone. This includes identifying and calling out existing issues such as structural barriers at our locations. In cross-departmental and cross-venue working groups, employees are committed to diversity and inclusion and initiate important transformation processes. <h3>Awareness teams</h3>

To offer visitors and staff support in dealing with discrimination, an awareness team is available during and after selected festivals. This consists of trained anti-discrimination counsellors from the Federal Association for Anti-Discrimination and Educational Work (BDB e. V.) and the Berlin Self-Help Association (Landesvereinigung Selbsthilfe Berlin e. V.). The awareness teams are available on site or can be reached by phone and email in German and English. The awareness teams record the incidents from the perspective of those affected and document them anonymously. In addition, they offer counselling on request and help in finding external counselling centres.

In 2019, the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency organised the first German Anti-Discrimination Days in Berlin in cooperation with Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Together with Black Brown Berlin, a format was created that included academic approaches as well as a cultural and workshop programme that celebrated intersectionality and diversity.

KBB works together with its houses &ndash; Berliner Festspiele including the Gropius Bau, Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) and Haus der Kulturen der Welt &ndash; to break down existing barriers and develop inclusive services &ndash; both digitally and on site. The aim is to actively contribute to enabling all people to participate equally in community and cultural life.

How can diversity-sensitive behaviour and inclusion be promoted and strengthened in the cultural sector? As a public cultural institution, KBB is particularly committed to the principles of equal opportunities and protection from discrimination.

Our events, projects and exhibitions create meeting places where debates take place. It is our responsibility to conceive these opened spaces in a diversity-oriented and discrimination-sensitive way. We dedicate ourselves to this task in terms of our programmes’ content as well as at an institutional level. 

Diversity and Inclusion

Prompted by an initiative for sustainability and culture: Between 2010 and 2012, the Federal Cultural Foundation (Kulturstiftung des Bundes) carried out the project &Uuml;ber Lebenskunst in cooperation with Haus der Kulturen der Welt. As part of the eponymous festival, in 2011 artists, scholars and activists presented reflections on the topic of climate change and invited people to try out sustainable models of an &ldquo;art of living&rdquo; for the 21st century. What can &ldquo;the good life&rdquo; mean in the face of the global ecological crisis? The initiative project, which sought to anchor long-standing sustainability debates more firmly in culture, became the starting point for KBB&rsquo;s engagement with ecological sustainability.

Together with staff, KBB has since been exploring the possibilities that a cultural institution offers as a place for forward-looking ideas in environmental protection. This is not only about making sustainability discourses communicable in our programmatic mission, but also about the potential of culture to drive overarching change in society. 

As a basis for this process, KBB has been using the international Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since 2013 to assess its own environmental impact and ascertain tangible figures &ndash; whether gauging water consumption in the individual buildings, conducting material flow analyses or measuring the kilowatt hours consumed for heating and spotlights.

<h3>The energy save mode</h3>

The KBB GmbH and the Berliner Festspiele are jointly developing an energy-saving mode for their websites. This function can be activated by a button on the header. Firstly, it will set the site to dark mode, so that your device uses less energy to illuminate its screen. Secondly, it will also display placeholders in place of embedded images and videos. This has the effect that fewer data have to be loaded in the background so that the website will load faster even at a lower data rate. This does not apply to our festival-specific vector graphics as these take up very little memory anyway. In order to be able to view media content marked by placeholders, energy-saving mode can simply be switched off temporarily.&nbsp;

Developed by the European Union, the international Eco-Management with Audit Scheme (EMAS) supports businesses in making an effective contribution to environmental protection. KBB has been aligning its environmental management with EMAS since 2013 and is continuously working on improving its own environmental impact.

EMAS works from the inside out by being woven into the DNA of the company: The basis of the system is the commitment and involvement of KBB employees. As an environmental team, they discuss data collected and, based on this, formulate annual measures for climate protection and resource conservation. EMAS supports and coordinates the efforts by regularly advancing the set goals through internal and external audits. In this way, the implementation of the self-selected measures is ensured and communicated internally and externally. The EMAS validation creates the necessary framework conditions to anchor environmental education in the institution and to sustainably change structures and processes.

On 24 November 2021, KBB received confirmation from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce that it can continue to hold the EMAS certificate for ecological management with registration number DE-107-00140 until at least 1 October 2024.

Since 2021, the Forum on Ecological Sustainability in Theatre has taken place annually as part of the Berliner Festspiele’s Theatertreffen. The project offers people and institutions in the German-speaking theatre industry a space to discuss sustainability issues in theatre and at the same time promotes networking with existing initiatives.

From March 2023 to December 2024, three Berlin schools explore sustainability using the means of artistic research and the goal of countering concerns about the climate crisis with the knowledge of their own power to act. Care and resistance techniques are developed and tested to transform powerlessness into agency. 

Schools of Sustainability: Agency instead of powerlessness

How can we as cultural organisers act more sustainably and contribute to a fundamental rethinking of the cultural sector? Instead of forgoing the arts, we rely on technical knowledge, creativity and innovation. As far as artistic processes allow, ecological aspects are taken into account in the planning, realisation and follow-up of our events, especially in the areas of resource use, procurement, business travel, transport and waste disposal. For example, stage exhibits are re-used by means of a cross-house materials market, edition sizes are reduced and guidelines for environmentally friendly event organisation are developed. Our goal is to create an all-encompassing awareness for environmentally friendly action and our own responsibility by pointing out alternatives.

How can exhibition spaces and stage venues reduce their CO2 emissions in the long term? Since the introduction of environmental management, KBB has continuously recorded the consumption data for heat, electricity, water, waste and certain consumer products as well as the resulting CO2 emissions for each location of its institutions. Their evaluation forms the basis for setting up optimising measures. The technical and energy refurbishment of KBB&rsquo;s venues and the switch to green electricity, which was completed in 2013, mark important milestones in the environmentally conscious administration and use of the buildings. In close exchange with allies, social responsibility also plays a major role when energy consumption has to be reduced due to rising costs and possible bottlenecks.

	<li>Photovoltaic system on the roof of the Gropius Bau since 2010</li>
	<li>Modernisation of the air conditioning and heating system of the Berliner Festspiele and installation of a heat recovery system</li>
	<li>Renewal of the steel and glass fa&ccedil;ade of Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW)</li>
	<li>Complete energy refurbishment of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele </li>
	<li>Gradual KBB-wide conversion to low-consumption LED lights in building management and in event operations</li>
	<li>Reducing the load on the servers: Reduction of self-operated servers from 18 to six servers and from three to two server rooms plus additional restriction of air-conditioning in the server rooms.</li>
	<li>Reduction of the room temperature to 19 &deg;C in the offices during the heating period</li>
</ul>

KBB has agreed with its employees to make business trips as climate-neutral as possible. For this reason, KBB only reimburses travel by public transport within Berlin. Rail is also the preferred mode of travel within Germany and to major European cities in neighbouring countries. Long-term employees have the option of purchasing the BVG (Berlin public transport) company ticket. In addition, KBB is gradually converting its vehicle fleet, necessary for its operations, to electric vehicles. 

Example measures:

	<li>Acquisition of electric cargo bikes and electric vans as a starting point for the conversion of the logistics vehicle fleet to environmentally friendly solutions</li>
	<li>Bicycle stations for rental bikes at our venues</li>
	<li>Promotion of bicycle use by employees &ndash; offer of a free bicycle check in cooperation with the ADFC as well as offer of company bicycle leasing</li>
	<li>Web conferences and online meetings are preferred</li>
</ul>

All those who produce, create and consume have to make decisions on sustainability. Therefore, it is of particular concern to KBB to involve the employees of all venues in the ecological orientation in order to accompany KBB as a company on its way to an ecological future. The employees of KBB are therefore invited to regular environmental team meetings in order to actively participate in the transformation process and to contribute their own ideas. Training and information on environmentally conscious behaviour at the workplace as well as joint excursions additionally strengthen awareness of ecological sustainability, while the members of the environmental team are always available as contact persons.

KBB supports the rewetting of moors in northern Germany by purchasing MoorFutures to cover unavoidable air travel by employees. MoorFutures is dedicated to the renaturation of peatlands in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. Powerful carbon reservoirs, peatlands bind about one third of the carbon existing in the earth&rsquo;s soil and biomass while covering only three percent of our planet. By purchasing voluntary climate protection certificates, KBB supports MoorFutures in its work to re-wet drained peatlands and thus permanently bind CO2 in the soil. Ecological Sustainability

How can cultural production be shaped amidst the global ecological crisis? What opportunities do cultural institutions offer to devise and test forward-looking ideas? Together with staff, KBB is addressing these questions and systematically working on improving its own environmental impact.

Sustainability

How can cultural institutions and our working environment be made more sustainable? With the help of the EMAS environmental management system, we are taking an active approach to resource conservation – ranging from energy refurbishments to guidelines for environmentally friendly action and programmatic debates.

What do I observe and experience when visiting an exhibition, a film, a play, or a concert? How do I experience what I see and hear? And to what extent does it connect with my own life? 

The outreach programme of the KBB houses, which is developed in collaboration with artists, art educators, researchers, and representatives of various communities, promotes new perspectives, activates knowledge, and invites the audience to exciting encounters. 

From experimental formats such as creating one&rsquo;s own garments or exhibition posters to workshops for school classes and families and guided tours in different languages, in various forms of community, access to complex content and artistic forms of expression are created and lastingly strengthened. This also includes the ability to speak one-on-one with contact persons on site, access to background information or individual creative programmes. The latter are longer-term collaborations that encourage people to produce their own work and enable them to contribute their personal experiences, individual expectations, and expertise.

For us, our work as hosts and cultural organisers goes hand in hand with a specific philosophy aimed at advancing young talent and gifted cultural professionals from all over the world. Various festivals and programme divisions of KBB&rsquo;s houses, such as the Treffen junge Szene of the Berliner Festspiele or Berlinale Talents, create opportunities for them to share with one another, further develop and examine their working methods and current aesthetics. Within the framework of mentoring programmes, competitions and workshops, the focus is on the questions and content of the actors. Young talents are given a platform to present their work, while discussion rounds, training courses and workshops offer exciting stimuli and opportunities for further education. With a special focus on diverse and equal access, new working methods for the cultural sector are tested, knowledge is shared and new connections are made for a strong network.

Six months of learning together, exchanging ideas, networking: The programme of Haus der Kulturen der Welt in cooperation with the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) invites young artists to rethink how an artistic practice can negotiate social problem areas. How can we think about cultures of the future today? How can institutions learn from younger generations?

Berlinale Talents is the talent development initiative and community of the Berlinale with almost 10,000 alumni worldwide. With a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, the programme has been offering workshops and screenplay labs for filmmakers from all over the world as well as talks for the public since 2003.

Mission

KBB – Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH – takes on the challenge of making art and culture visible time and again, taking present and future demands into account. Together with our artistically independent venues – Berlinale, Berliner Festspiele including the Gropius Bau and Haus der Kulturen der Welt – we hold a wide variety of cultural events for large numbers of people throughout the year. History

At the beginning of the 2000s, the federal government and the state of Berlin were faced with the task of reorganising structures and expanding Berlin’s international cultural significance. In this context, individual institutions became the responsibility of the federal government. 

Berlinale

The Berlin International Film Festival is a unique venue for artistic debate and entertainment. As one of the largest public film festivals in the world, the Berlinale attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world to the city every year. 

Berliner Festspiele

The Berliner Festspiele organise various festivals and art exhibitions, concerts, dance and theatre performances, readings, lectures, discussions and much more throughout the year. In addition to its two own venues – Gropius Bau and Haus der Berliner Festspiele – the programme is presented at other locations and venues in Berlin.

Structure

More than a merger: KBB unites three cultural institutions with an overarching organisational structure. Working together promotes the idea of cooperation, creates synergies and at the same time ensures planning certainty. KBB is supported and funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. 

KBB &ndash; Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH &ndash; takes on the challenge of making art and culture visible time and again, taking present and future demands into account. Together with our artistically independent venues &ndash; Berliner Festspiele including the Gropius Bau, Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) and Haus der Kulturen der Welt &ndash; we hold a wide variety of cultural events for large numbers of people throughout the year. We pool knowledge, develop synergies and create access to engage with the arts &ndash; whether visual arts, film, music, theatre or dance. 

For over 20 years, as hosts, cooperating partners and cultural producers, we have been dedicated to the mission of presenting outstanding projects in Berlin as well as special events in Germany and abroad. A common but distinctive characteristic of KBB venues is that they have no permanent collections or ensembles of their own. Beyond the preservation of cultural assets, our aim is to open the venues, to hold multi-faceted events and to explore new possibilities for coexistence within their programmes. 

What could tomorrow&rsquo;s societies look like? What part does culture play in this? With the aim of promoting intercultural dialogue, debate and participation, we question our own and society&rsquo;s actions, reflecting on global and local developments. We translate current social discourses into aesthetic practice to design future scenarios for a sustainable cultural sector. In doing so, we initiate thought processes and, together with international actors, create space for courageous and innovative approaches in the presentation and mediation of the arts.

One cultural institution, three business divisions, four houses with multiple venues and four managing directors – this is the structure of KBB.

HISTORY

KBB – Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH – is an initiator, host, partner, and facilitator. It unites four artistically independent houses  with an overarching organisational structure.

Three artistic directors and one managing director together take on the task of representing KBB to the outside world and developing it further as an interdisciplinary cultural facilitator institution. The respective artistic directors are responsible for artistic decisions and thus for the content of the divisions. Their decisions are implemented by the programme departments, while the central departments support the implementation of the processes and ensure legal compliance. 

The artistic directors and the managing director jointly represent the respective divisions. Regular consultation between the directors leads to an overarching dialogue that takes political stimuli into account without neglecting the artistic freedom of the divisions.

As a public contracting authority, KBB is subject to the rules and regulations of public procurement. Our tenders range from infrastructural services in the area of facility management to supplies and services in the design and IT sectors to event technology. 

For several years now, we have been increasing our efforts with regard to <a href="${link:{uuid:{dfb989a4-c6ea-40bb-9f86-0224a1c482b3},repository:{website},path:{/kbb-eu/verantwortung/nachhaltigkeit}}}">ecological sustainability</a> and, with the introduction of the <a href="${link:{uuid:{dfb989a4-c6ea-40bb-9f86-0224a1c482b3},repository:{website},path:{/kbb-eu/verantwortung/nachhaltigkeit}}}">environmental management system EMAS</a>, have also formulated new requirements for our procurement management. We follow guidelines for the environmentally friendly procurement and organisation of cultural events for our service descriptions and also systematically take them into account in the selection of our partners.

Berlin is known for its numerous &ldquo;Spielpl&auml;tze&rdquo; for kids, but the project &ldquo;Radical Playgrounds&rdquo; is a place where play gets serious. It arrives at Gropius Hain for eleven weeks like an itinerant, temporary funfair: both melancholic and light-hearted, sad and joyful, funny and serious.

Over the course of five decades, Nancy Holt explored how we perceive our environment and how we attempt to understand our place on the surface of this planet. From March 2024, the Gropius Bau presents&nbsp;Circles of Light, the artist&rsquo;s most comprehensive survey exhibition in Germany to date. It includes film, video, photography, sound works, concrete poetry, sculptures and expansive installations as well as drawings.
