Mission

KBB – Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH – takes on the challenge of making art and culture visible time and again, taking present and future demands into account. Together with our artistically independent venues – Berlinale, Berliner Festspiele including the Gropius Bau and Haus der Kulturen der Welt – we hold a wide variety of cultural events for large numbers of people throughout the year. We pool knowledge, develop synergies and create access to engage with the arts – whether visual arts, film, music, theatre or dance. 

Über die KBB I Geschichte

History

At the beginning of the 2000s, the federal government and the state of Berlin were faced with the task of reorganising structures and expanding Berlin’s international cultural significance. In this context, individual institutions became the responsibility of the federal government. 

Berlinale

The Berlin International Film Festival is a unique venue for artistic debate and entertainment. As one of the largest public film festivals in the world, the Berlinale attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world to the city every year. 

Berliner Festspiele

The Berliner Festspiele organise various festivals and art exhibitions, concerts, dance and theatre performances, readings, lectures, discussions and much more throughout the year. In addition to its two own venues – Gropius Bau and Haus der Berliner Festspiele – the programme is presented at other locations and venues in Berlin.

Structure

More than a merger: KBB unites three cultural institutions with an overarching organisational structure. Working together promotes the idea of cooperation, creates synergies and at the same time ensures planning certainty. KBB is supported and funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. 

Whether exhibitions, film and music festivals or panel discussions: We create places of artistic debate that address current issues, invite people to engage and demonstrate new perspectives for sustainable cultural work.

South African artist William Kentridge takes the events of a historic sea voyage from Marseille to Martinique as point of departure for his fascinating work &ldquo;The Great Yes, The Great No&rdquo;, a theatre play, oratorio and chamber opera all at once. The piece is inspired by the anti-rational and inventive dynamics of surrealism and reveals the strange beauty of the unexpected, the unconventional and the often overlooked.&nbsp;

The Great Yes, The Great No

This year&rsquo;s Jazzfest Berlin is welcoming 120 international musicians from more than 20 countries to Berlin, spanning an artistically diverse range, from free improvisation to hip-hop and noise, from lyrical and melancholic tones to distorted guitar sounds and stuttering beats, and from introverted solo sets to thundering large ensembles. The exhibition brings together works by around fifty international artists who use a variety of media to respond to the rise of fascist ideologies. Complemented by historical artworks, it reveals unexpected historical continuities and offers insights into the ideological seduction and aesthetics of fascist ideologies, as well as their social and technological dynamics.

Global Fascisms

Widely regarded as one of the most original and influential artists of the 20th century, Diane Arbus&rsquo; bold black-and-white photographs demolish aesthetic conventions and upend all certainties. With Diane Arbus: Konstellationen, Gropius Bau presents the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. Featuring 454 prints, many of them shown here for the first time, Konstellationen offers new perspectives on Arbus&rsquo; iconic images and the wide range of her portraiture.

Over ten days in February, the Berlinale offers a diverse, independent and risk-taking programme that in 2026 will comprise around 200 works. The film screenings are complemented by numerous industry activities. As always, the premieres in the Berlinale Palast on Potsdamer Platz are a highlight of the festival.
