KBB Supervisory Board

The supervisory board of KBB supports and supervises management in a trusting partnership. Its twelve members consist of four representatives each from the federal government and the state of Berlin as well as four additional independent representatives. The supervisory board meets twice a year and is chaired by the Minister of State for Culture and Media.

Mission

KBB – Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH – takes on the challenge of making art and culture visible time and again, taking present and future demands into account. Together with our artistically independent venues – Berlinale, Berliner Festspiele including the Gropius Bau and Haus der Kulturen der Welt – we hold a wide variety of cultural events for large numbers of people throughout the year. We pool knowledge, develop synergies and create access to engage with the arts – whether visual arts, film, music, theatre or dance. 

Über die KBB I Geschichte

History

At the beginning of the 2000s, the federal government and the state of Berlin were faced with the task of reorganising structures and expanding Berlin’s international cultural significance. In this context, individual institutions became the responsibility of the federal government. 

Berlinale

The Berlin International Film Festival is a unique venue for artistic debate and entertainment. As one of the largest public film festivals in the world, the Berlinale attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world to the city every year. 

Berliner Festspiele

The Berliner Festspiele organise various festivals and art exhibitions, concerts, dance and theatre performances, readings, lectures, discussions and much more throughout the year. In addition to its two own venues – Gropius Bau and Haus der Berliner Festspiele – the programme is presented at other locations and venues in Berlin.

Structure

More than a merger: KBB unites three cultural institutions with an overarching organisational structure. Working together promotes the idea of cooperation, creates synergies and at the same time ensures planning certainty. KBB is supported and funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. 

Whether exhibitions, film and music festivals or panel discussions: We create places of artistic debate that address current issues, invite people to engage and demonstrate new perspectives for sustainable cultural work.

In Thorsten Lensing’s play “Tanzende Idioten”, Ursina Lardi, Karin Neuhäuser, Sebastian Blomberg, André Jung and drummer Willi Kellers play characters careening their way from one disaster to the next. What defines them is an absurd blend of brutality and tenderness, anarchy and metaphysical curiosity, existential pain and zest for life.

As an international co-production, artists Nina Laisné and François Chaignaud and singer Nadia Larcher have developed “Último helecho”, a performance that is carried by music, singing and dance at once and where Baroque meets South American folklore and mythology.

MaerzMusik sees itself as a place to exchange artistic knowledge(s) through new encounters and collective experiences. The festival is rooted in the multimodality of listening, contemporary music, and sound, employing concerts, performances, installations, music theatre, film screenings, and discursive formats to open up a space where life, art, and theory can co-exist.

The exhibition brings together works by around fifty international artists who use a variety of media to respond to the rise of fascist ideologies. Complemented by historical artworks, it reveals unexpected historical continuities and offers insights into the ideological seduction and aesthetics of fascist ideologies, as well as their social and technological dynamics.

Global Fascisms

Widely regarded as one of the most original and influential artists of the 20th century, Diane Arbus&rsquo; bold black-and-white photographs demolish aesthetic conventions and upend all certainties. With Diane Arbus: Konstellationen, Gropius Bau presents the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. Featuring 454 prints, many of them shown here for the first time, Konstellationen offers new perspectives on Arbus&rsquo; iconic images and the wide range of her portraiture.

Over ten days in February, the Berlinale offers a diverse, independent and risk-taking programme that in 2026 will comprise around 200 works. The film screenings are complemented by numerous industry activities. As always, the premieres in the Berlinale Palast on Potsdamer Platz are a highlight of the festival.
